Nature Scavenger Hunt & Journey Stick Workshop

Nature Scavenger Hunt & Journey Stick Workshop

This fun-filled adventure for kids involves hunting, collecting, learning, sharing discoveries and an opportunity to create their own ‘journey stick’ so they can retell their adventures to the world! This adventurous workshop blends the fun discovery and excitement of going on a scavenger hunt around the farm, with the creation of their very own ‘journey stick’ using the items they found.

This Scavenger Hunt and Workshop is suitable for children aged 5+ and can be adapted according to their age and ability.

What is a Journey Stick?

Native Americans and Aboriginal people often created journey sticks on their adventures, tying natural materials to their sticks in chronological order as they found them. These helped them find their way home and retell their adventures to their tribes back home.

When children are asked to recount the story of their daily adventures and explorations, they become active learners, leaders, and caretakers of their environment. Just like that, they understand in some basic way that their journey is shared with that of the world.

What does a session look like?

This workshop is divided in to two sessions. Once each child has chosen their journey stick, children are safely guided around the property of Pleasant Sense Farm with their map and nature explorer bag. They’ll be asked to find natural objects along the way and stop at various ‘stations’ to learn more about their discoveries.

When all nature items have been found, we arrive back to base to enjoy light refreshments then begin the second session of creating our journey sticks.

Younger children will be able to create a simpler version of the journey stick. Older children can make a journey stick the traditional way by using their creativity and imagination by weaving items they found around the stick.

The nature scavenger hunt, is not about who finds the most items. It’s more about sharing their discoveries together and creating a lasting memory that they can take home and share with their loved ones. This adventure teaches children to be observant in nature, appreciate natural beauty, inspire creativity, and gain confidence in retelling the story of their adventure to others.

The parent/caregiver is required to stay with their child/children. Younger siblings 4 years and under are welcome to accompany their parent/s but must be supervised.
